Germany: Drastic funding reduction at public service broadcaster DW undermines media pluralism

At its meeting in Paris from 4 to 7 May, the Congress of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) supported a declaration ー initiated by dju (Deutsche Journalistinnen und Journalisten Union) in ver.di in Germany and the Union of Journalists of Athens Daily Newspapers (JUADN) in Greece ー condemning the drastic reduction in staffing and programming at Germany’s public service broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW). The IFJ has warned that reducing funding for public service media undermines media pluralism and the right of citizens to seek and receive information.

Serbia: Solidarity with Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation following another setback in its quest for justice

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joined the undersigned media freedom and journalist organisations in standing in full solidarity with the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation, which has been ordered to pay over one million dinars (€8,812) in damages in a defamation case brought by those acquitted of the murder of the Serbian editor and newspaper founder, Slavko Ćuruvija. For 27 years, the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation has fought for justice for the assassination of Ćuruvija, who was gunned down outside his apartment in Belgrade in 1999.

"AI shall not destroy journalism fundamentals," says IFJ General Secretary

On 19 May, the European University Institute (EUI) organised an online workshop on artificial intelligence and journalism as part of the Media for Citizens and Democracy in the Digital Age project (M4CD), which is led by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). In its introductory speech, IFJ General Secretary spoke about the importance to maintain the fundamentals of journalism when dealing with AI.
